America’s early history of tragic shipwrecks and heroic rescues revealed the need for coastal lighthouses to make navigating America’s waterways safer. By the early 1800s, ships were sailing from the Atlantic coast to Chicago via canals, rivers, and the Great Lakes. As America moved west, water transportation through the Great Lakes of the Midwest carried passengers and goods, lumber, coal, and iron ore for steel mills. Every river flowing into these lakes needed breakwater lights and pier lights. Shallow reefs needed lights and fog horns to warn ships of hazards.Of the 700 lighthouses in the United States, 225 of them are scattered around the Great Lakes. Lake Michigan has almost a hundred. This newsletter details my favorite lighthouses on the shores of Lake Michigan.
