004 - The Hana Coast of Maui, Hawaii
(Print with color photos)

Photograph America Newsletter on the Hana Coast of Maui, Hawaii

This mystical island, risen from the sea in the volcanic heat of the god, Pele, offers photographers a chance to capture ancient Hawaiian images along the eastern shore of the Island of Maui. Hike into the mountains to photograph forests of giant bamboo and swim lagoons filled with tropical fish. Photographers will love the gardens filled with brilliant tropical blossoms and the black sand beaches washed by the warm sea. This newsletter includes details for locations in and around Hana and instruction in photographing humid tropical rain forests.

One of my favorite drives follows the twists and turns through the deep canyons of the jungles and rain forest on the North Shore of Maui. Travel the narrow road called "The Hana Highway" eastward to the remote village of Hana and spend a week exploring the red sand beaches and the hidden waterfalls. The morning sky above Hana Bay is filled with long rows of small puffy clouds, painted with the colors of the rising sun. From high overhead, cloud pillows stretch to the horizon and slowly change from slate gray to pink to red to bronze and then lighten to the same color as the blowing sea foam. Trade winds blowing from the east bend tall coconut palms and catch the crest of each wave rolling onto the black sand beach.
