Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep live and thrive in the highest and most rugged mountain ranges in the western United States. Their summer habitats are so remote that they are seldom seen and are difficult to photograph. Bighorns graze on high alpine meadows and avoid predators and humans by scaling precipitous cliffs. The first snows of winter bury their food supplies. By October, bighorn sheep leave their summer meadows high in the Absaroka Mountains east of Yellowstone National Park to find snow-free grazing in the river valleys on the eastern side of the mountains. The Wapiti Valley along the North Fork of the Shoshone River, west of Cody, Wyoming, sits in the snow-shadow of the Absaroka Range and receives less snow than the Tetons and Yellowstone. Cody, Wyoming, is one of the best places for wildlife photographers to find herds of wintering bighorns in North America.
