Orcas, the largest members of the dolphin family, are warm-blooded, breathe air, possess lungs, and give birth to live young and nurse them. Like humans, orcas are mammals, and at the top of their respective food chains. The waters off Vancouver Island are home to orcas, or "killer whales." One of the best places to see and photograph orcas in North America is located in the narrow strait between Vancouver Island and the mainland of British Columbia. The Johnstone Strait is ideal for whale watching and orca photography. This newsletter is about my travels through some of the most spectacular landscapes in the Pacific Northwest to photograph these magnificent creatures of the sea.
