Photograph America Newsletter on San Francisco in the Rain

This newsletter offers something completely different: a photo exploration of the city of San Francisco during rainy days of the winter season. From Market Street, through Chinatown to North Beach and along the edge of the bay, this newsletter points out new ways of seeing and photographing the city. Bring your raincoat and wrap your camera in a plastic bag. Walk the streets of San Francisco in the rain to search for interesting visual effects and create some unusual photographs. Photographing the city under a blanket of thick fog or in the rain at night, with long exposures and a tripod, can be evocative.

Heavy rain clouds can create a simulated film noir mood, even in the middle of the day. I shot at dusk and in the morning while street lamps were still visible, giving the effect of night. Most night photography in the city requires long exposures and tripods. Using higher ISOs and lenses with image stabilization, most of my exposures are hand held. When sharp focus is a problem, I shoot and carefully preview each image with a loupe and then re-shoot when necessary.
